professional organizing process creating calm home

Toronto Sun | How professional organizers transform spaces with a tried-and-true process

Gain your composure… at home

Before co-founding Lumea Living, Jen Rowe was already shaping conversations around thoughtful home organization in Toronto. In a feature for the Toronto Sun, Jen shared the process she used to transform everyday spaces into calm, functional environments—an approach that continues to guide our work today.

At its core, the philosophy remains the same: when your surroundings support you, daily life feels lighter and more manageable.

A personal revelation sparks a career

Jen’s path into professional organizing began with a moment of clarity while visiting a friend’s impeccably organized kitchen cupboard.

“It was the most beautifully organized thing I had ever seen,” Jen recalled.

At the time, living in a century-old Toronto home with two young children, she experienced firsthand how physical clutter quietly contributes to stress when she and her husband took on the task of reorganizing their very small primary closet.

“We had the best sleep that night. You often don’t know it’s a stressor in your life until you see the results.”

This experience became the foundation for a career and business dedicated to helping others achieve the same transformation.

Our signature organizing process

The Toronto Sun highlighted Lumea Living’s (formerly NEAT Method Toronto) tried-and-true organizing process, designed to remove overwhelm while creating systems that last:

  • Empty the space entirely to gain clarity
  • Sort and categorize by use or function
  • Edit thoughtfully, removing duplicates or excess
  • Plan and implement a bespoke system tailored to the client’s lifestyle

As the article notes, “The client does not work alongside us; we prefer for them to leave the details to us.” This white-glove approach allows clients to step away while we manage the details with precision and care.

Why this process works

People often seek professional organizing support during moments of transition—seasonal resets, growing families, or when daily life begins to feel heavier than it needs to be. The Toronto Sun highlighted practical examples that remain central to our work today:

  • Kitchens: Keep counters clear, store like with like, remove duplicates, use drawer dividers and labels, and categorize thoughtfully.
  • Outdoor spaces: Use wall-mounted systems or shelving to keep items off the ground and store seasonal gear in waterproof bins.
  • Toy organization: Avoid over-categorizing; use appropriately sized bins for all vehicles or similar items.

As the article aptly explains, “Organizing itself can be overwhelming—it often gets worse before it gets better. The process isn’t about getting rid of things; it’s about using the space you have more effectively.”
